چکیده

Wetting of ~975 grain boundaries (GB’s) by liquid Cu in an iron-based alloy has been studied as a function of the five macroscopic degrees of freedom (DoF’s) of grain boundary character. In addition, models of GB energy in terms of all five DoF’s, and o f anisotropic solid-liquid interfacial energy have been developed. The experimentally observed wetting behavior is interpreted in terms of the model, and it is shown that reasonable overall agreement is obtained between experimental results and model predictions.

Solid-state wetting transitions at grain boundaries

A previously developed model of the dependence of grain boundary (GB) segregation on GB character has been exercised to investigate solid-state wetting transitions at GBs, and their anisotropy. In the case of binary systems displaying a solid-state miscibility gap, it is shown that the wetting transition temperature for precipitates at a GB is anisotropic, and is inversely related to GB energy....

On grain boundary wetting during deformation

We use numerical experiments to analyze the kinetics of grain boundary wetting in polycrystalline aggregates under the influence of an external applied shear stress. Grain boundary wetting is driven by the stress concentration at the tip of the fluid front. The extent of wetting of favorably oriented grain boundaries depends on the fluid mobility number b, which is defined as the ratio of the r...

Validating computed grain boundary energies in fcc metals using the grain boundary character distribution

The grain boundary character distribution (GBCD) is a direct measurement that can be determined from a single planar section. Since the GBCD is inversely related to the grain boundary energy distribution, it offers a useful metric for validating grain boundary energy calculations. Comparisons between the measured GBCD and calculated energies for 388 grain boundaries in Al show that, for boundar...

A Short Review of High-Temperature Wetting and Complexion Transitions with a Critical Assessment of Their Influence on Liquid Metal Embrittlement and Corrosion

The basic concepts and new developments in the general areas of grain boundary segregation (adsorption), wetting, and complexion (interfacial phase-like) transitions are briefly reviewed. Subsequently, recent studies in several relevant areas are discussed. At the atomic level, the formation of bilayers in Ni-Bi and Cu-Bi have been observed and found to be the root cause for liquid metal embrit...

Mesoscale Simulation of the Evolution of the Grain Boundary Character Distribution

A mesoscale, variational simulation of grain growth in two-dimensions has been used to explore the effects of grain boundary properties on the grain boundary character distribution. Anisotropy in the grain boundary energy has a stronger influence on the grain boundary character distribution than anisotropy in the grain boundary mobility. As grain growth proceeds from an initially random distrib...
